Engine Brake Valve

An engine brake is a special helper that helps slow big trucks down safely. Like when a truck is going on a long road and the driver has to stop or slow down. The engine brake is similar to someone you can call upon when slowing down the truck using the ordinary brakes isn't enough.

How does it work? The engine brake prevents air from flowing freely inside the truck’s engine. As air doesn’t have the liberty to move, the truck begins to decelerate. It’s sort of like how when you put your hand up in front of a fan, you can feel the air pushing against you.

How an Engine Brake Valve Benefits Heavy-Duty Vehicles

There are 3 major components to the engine brake, that all work together. One is a valve that controls air flow. Think of this valve as something like a gate which opens and closes. A spring holds the valve closed, until the driver needs to decelerate. The actuator acts as a slave that either opens or shuts the valve by shutting down upon receiving a command from the driver to stop.

Large vehicles such as buses, delivery vehicles and long-haul vehicles require reliable stopping mechanism. Overusing the regular brakes means that they wear out quickly. Now this is where the engine brake plays a big role! It assists in slowing down the truck, without putting too much strain on the regular brakes. This helps brakes function better and last longer.
